Push Gmail now available to iPhone owners
Do you have a Gmail Account? Do you own an iPhone? If you answered “Yes” to these 2 questions then the latest news is, Push email is now supported by Google and the iPhone as of today! If you own an iPhone and don’t have a Gmail account then now is the time to register for one. Previously, Gmail and iPhone users were limited to setting their email to “Fetch” or Sync every so often. Push email is all about delivering new email to your hand held mobile devices instantly and actively as opposed to pull email which is referred to when hand held mobile devices poll for new email at frequent intervals, such as once every hour. The well known and established BlackBerry has been providing push email for years via the BlackBerry servers around the globe and Windows Mobile Devices first began offering push email in 2003 via ActiveSync and Microsoft Exchange.
Push email has been available to iPhone users via other services such as Apple’s “paid” cloud service MobileMe or via a corporate Microsoft Exchange Server or through obtaining a Yahoo email account. Google now offers the same capabilities to their Gmail service, however there is one catch or limiting factor. If you are already syncing your corporate email via Microsoft Exchange then you will not be able to also have your Gmail account setup via the push method as it utilises the same ActiveSync protocol used by Microsoft Exchange. At the moment, Apple only supports one ActiveSync account on your device.
Recall that Google first offered the ability to synchronise your Google Calendars over the air not that long ago via Google Sync, and now this has been extended to contacts and email.
